1950年代后期，中国掀起了大跃进运动。上海里弄的家庭妇女们也响应号召，积极参加。居委会戴妈妈（陈立中饰）全力支持她们，而解放前受尽苦难的刘大妈（范雪朋饰）不同意儿媳王彩凤（张瑞芳饰）参加，要求她在家相夫教子。儿子刘根发（温锡莹饰）却不同意妈妈的观点，支持妻子的行动。郑宝卿（孙道临饰）是个典型的大男子主义，他也不同意妻子蔡桂贞（沙莉饰）参加生产组，但蔡不顾反对，把家事理清，还当了缝纫组长。戴妈妈帮蔡桂贞一起做郑宝卿的思想工作，使他认识了自己的错误。陆阿凤（汪漪饰）由于怕缝纫组借她的缝纫机而违心参加了缝纫组，但当缝纫组为儿童福利院赶制棉衣时，她羞愧难当......。A young junior hockey player's life is shattered by an in-game act of violence.
