改编自格雷厄姆·斯维夫特的同名小说。故事发生在1924年，尼文夫妇（科林·费斯、奥利维娅·科尔曼饰）去参加了邻居家儿子保罗（乔什·奥康纳饰）与艾玛（艾玛·达西饰）的订婚午餐会，尼文家的女佣简（奥黛莎·杨饰）因此可以放假去庆祝母亲节，她为自己的自由感到高兴。近7年来，她乐此不疲、毫无愧色地做了保罗的情人。这次他们终于可以在保罗的卧室里第一次见面了，今天将是他们作为恋人的最后一次见面。。这是一个就发生在你我身边的故事，一群再平常不过的小人物身上饱含辛酸又充满渴望的故事。松江市，一个东北边陲的小城。一群来自全国各地的农民工为了生存，来到了这里，他们把汗水浸透在城市人未来的梦榻上——“香榭丽舍”这个城市最现代化的高级公寓的建筑工地上，在这个民工心目中可望而不可及，甚至不敢想象的幸福生活的殿堂的建设中，他们像仰望着一天天高耸的塔楼一样仰望着自己的渴望。而在这座未来富丽堂皇的幸福殿堂的旁边，是他们栖息的简陋工棚。工棚里，上百名民工们围着工长谢老大质问发工钱的事，谢老大无奈地告诉大家，答应今天付钱的负责人张彪根本就没有出现。气急败坏的民工不相信谢老大的话，他们砸开了办公室的门，却发现里面空空如也……血汗工资无情地被非法挪用，民工得以养家糊口的工钱被无期限地拖延，为了生计，被迫集体追讨，可是他们讨来的却是暴力威胁和致命的恐吓，这群缺乏人文关怀的弱势群体的生命危在旦夕……。Disarmingly realistic in its depiction of the realities of frontier life, Heartland is a strong antidote to the cliches of traditional Westerns. This semi-documentary slice of life is based on the diaries of Elmore Randall Stewart about her days on the Wyoming frontier in the early 20th century. It's a strongly feminist statement about a woman raising her small daughter alone and scrapping for a living by working for a shy Scottish rancher. Director Richard Pearce brings an endearing touch to a film that is helped greatly by the dazzling cinematography of Fred Murphy. Conchata Ferrell and Rip Torn star in this small film that substitutes veracity for a high-powered plot. Pearce worked as a cinematographer on Woodstock and other documentaries before making his directorial debut. Winner of the 1980 Berlin Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival。
