Barnabáš Kos, a triangle player at a symphonic orchestra, is suddenly promoted to serve as the head of the said institution, even though both he and his superiors deem him completely unfit for the task. Encouraged in equal parts by this unexpected recognition and the servile praise of his colleagues, Kos’s modesty starts to gradually vanish. The erstwhile bashful and aloof percussionist quickly becomes aware of the advantages of his new office, and begins to realise his increasingly ludicrous artistic ambitions. Ultimately, the submissive marionette turns into a source of public humiliation, and his astonishing career finds an abrupt end. Orchestra serves here as a microcosm that grotesquely reflects the absurd and tragicomic mechanisms of the paranoid apparatus of power. Eva Näripe。1947年春天，龙王岛的人民欢庆丰收。赶小海的春华在礁石的沙窝里拾到一个红圈牌烟盒；儿童在小白鞋家又查出同样牌子的烟头；村中出现了迟龙章反攻倒算的黑帖子；王四江在海上捕鱼时又遇到了土匪。这前后发生的一切怪现象，使渔救会长王四江心中很不平静。迟龙章把民兵队长二虎抓去做人质，以此胁迫归还他的财物。王四江在思考着对策。他召集村民们开会，号召人们要以牙还牙。迟龙章的叔叔迟老拐被吓得愿只身去怪石岛领回二虎他们。迟龙章被迫放回二虎。根据战局需要，我们的部队暂时撤离了龙王岛。迟龙章随即配合敌海战连窜犯回岛，反攻倒算，顿时搞得龙王岛鸡犬不宁。铁蛋为营救被迟龙章抓走的儿童团团长王海生，炸死了小白鞋。村里的工作由刚入党的刘三嫂负责。铁蛋按刘三嫂的话，同儿童团一起贴传单，配合武工队严惩叛徒李慧生。迟龙章为查出村中的共产党，追查打死伪村长的人，将全村人抓到海边，声称不说出村中的“独立营”，就铡死大贵。老油工为救大贵，壮烈牺牲。迟龙章恼羞成怒，下令屠杀无辜的乡亲们，铁蛋毅然挺身而出，保护全村群众。铁蛋以假口供骗迟龙章派出大批兵力去“围剿”大龙山。敌人中计，铁蛋被迟龙章杀害。在龙王岛人民群众的配合下，解放军重登龙王岛，迟龙章中弹掉进大海。龙王岛回到了人民手中。。
